The Bruce ECO-Industrial Park (“Bruce ECO”) is located on the east shore of Lake Huron between the thriving communities of Kincardine and Port Elgin, in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. It is located adjacent to the Bruce Nuclear Power Development (“Bruce Power”), one of the world’s largest independent power generating facilities. Bruce Power generates enough clean electricity to supply approximately 25 per cent of Ontario's power needs.

Bruce ECO was founded on the premise that long-term economic policies must incorporate energy use in the most environmentally friendly way possible. This project is a sustainable industrial development that strives to integrate various industries for long-term economic growth and environmental sustainability (Eco-Industrial Park).

Bruce ECO has available infrastructure to supply clean energy in the form of steam via a 24 inch (600 mm) pipeline that can deliver approx. 300,000 lbs/hr to the Bruce ECO businesses, with a 10-inch condensate return line.

THE BRUCE ECO INDUSTRIAL PARK IS THE FUTURE

Location and Market Access

Within a day’s drive of major North American markets, Bruce County has a well-established transportation corridor. It has
excellent provincial highway access to the major markets of Southern Ontario and the Northern United States. Provincial
Highways 4, 6, 9, 86, and 21 are the main connecting routes to Highway 401 and major North American metropolitan Centres.

There are a number of trucking companies and commercial/bus lines servicing the area. Bruce County is close to major deepwater harbours of the Great Lakes. The Hamilton Port offers a deep-water port for international commercial shipping. In addition, the regional port of Goderich is also accessible for international shipping with custom clearance. There are also 12 harbour marinas along the coastline of Bruce County to accommodate commercial and/or pleasure craft.

Southern Bruce County is within 180 kilometres of Pearson International Airport in Toronto (one of the largest Airports in North America). There are four regional airports in the area:

  • Kincardine Airport, with two runways and capable of jet services
  • Saugeen /Port Elgin Airport
  • Wiarton- Keppel Airport
  • Hanover Airport

Concept

Bruce ECO is developing into a community of processing, manufacturing and service businesses/facilities located together on a common integrated and interlinked property in accordance with ECO-Industrial Park principles.

Member businesses seek enhanced environmental, economic, and social performance through collaboration in managing environmental and resource issues. The main goal of the Bruce ECO is to improve the economic performance of the participating companies while minimizing their environmental impacts, by establishing a system where the by-product of one industry/process is the raw material of another neighbouring industry/process, resulting in lower pollution and environmental impact .

Components of Bruce ECO include “green” design of the industrial park infrastructure and facilities, cleaner production methods, pollution prevention systems, energy efficiency, and inter-company partnerships.

Bruce ECO-Industrial Park Features & Design

    1. Fully Developed Industrial Land - Bruce ECO is a fully developed industrial park that supports the building of industrial/commercial properties.

    2. Fully Serviced – Current Services at the Bruce ECO include steam, electricity, waste management and industrial water. These services are currently provided by Bruce Power and Hydro One. Equipment and piping infrastructure are established for the delivery and condensate return of steam energy to all lots.

    3. Flexible Zoning – The Industrial Park has flexible zoning to reduce legal and procedural complications in the establishment of new processes and facilities.

    4. Flexible Lot sizes – There are different lot sizes and types (commercial and industrial) available for interested parties. In addition, future lot sizes may be accommodated depending on requirements.

    5. Environmental Approvals (including Nuclear) – Environmental Impact Assessments have been completed for the Industrial Park and surrounding areas for various applications and uses including Nuclear.

    6. By-Product Exchange – The By-Product Exchange system will assist member companies in  establishing and facilitating a network for the by-products they produce. This operation will act as a support function activity investigating possible uses for by-products both within Bruce ECO and externally. Additionally, research support will be provided to the various member facilities to help develop new and innovative ways to utilize by-products as raw material. The system will also actively seek new industry that takes advantage of byproducts produced at the Industrial Park.

    7. Waste Conversion to Raw Materials – In addition, to the By-product exchange system, a waste conversion to raw materials system will help find efficient and sustainable uses for both internal and external processes. An example includes the conversion of solid municipal waste as feed for a Biomass Conversion System.

    8. Environmental Assistance and Solutions – As stated the Bruce ECO-Industrial Park is built on the premise of sustainability while assisting member firms in achieving profitability.
Thus, Environmental Assistance and Solutions will be provided to help support Bruce ECO members. These will include environmental management systems, environmental technology, developing reduction in costs through environmental applications, environmental design and build, and updating member firms on new environmental issues.
